George's New Hatchet

There is a famous story about George Washington and this cherry tree. People have told the story for many, many years. Nowadays we know that somebody made up the story and that it didn't really happen. But the story shows what kind of person George Washington was, even as a boy, so we still like to tell it.

When George was a small boy, his father gave him a brand new hatchet. George was delighted. He tried using his new hatchet on logs from the woodpile: chop, chop, chop!

Then a thought came to him. Wouldn't it be exciting to cut down a real tree?

So George Washington went into his father's orchard. He saw a fine young tree, and he set to work with his new hatchet: chop, chop, chop! Crash! The tree fell to the ground.
